Trump says Stefanik did him ‘a big favor’ by staying in Congress

Trump told reporters Friday Rep. Elise Stefanik did him “a big favor” by agreeing to stay in Congress instead of going to the United Nations.

Trump announced Thursday that he had pulled the New York Republican’s nomination as U.N. ambassador, saying he was concerned about Republicans’ razor-thin majority in the House.

He said Friday that he didn’t want to risk Democrats possibly winning Florida’s two special elections for the U.S. House next week.

He noted all the money the party has spent to flip those seats.

“We don’t want to take any chances. It’s as simple as that. It’s basic politics,” he said.
