President Trump is flirting with running for a third term — no joke.
The move would put him on a crash course with the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which limits a person from being elected president more than twice.
“There are methods which you could do it, as you know,” Mr. Trump said in an interview with NBC News.
Pressed on whether he was joking, Mr. Trump said, “No, no, I’m not joking.”
Steve Bannon, a Trump loyalist who served as chief strategist in the first Trump administration, has advocated for Mr. Trump’s staying beyond 2028.
Other Republicans have thrown cold water on the idea, saying that the Constitution prohibits it and that those promoting the idea are simply trying to keep the MAGA movement engaged.
Asked whether Vice President J.D. Vance could win the White House and then pass the job back to Mr. Trump, the president said “that’s one” of the methods he was referring to.
“But there are others too,” Mr. Trump said, refusing to elaborate.
Asked whether he was ready to bear the responsibility of being president for four more years, Mr. Trump said, “Well, I like working.”
“Unlike Sleepy Joe, unlike Sleepy Joe,” he added, referring to former President Joseph R. Biden.
